The U.S. Chamber of Commerce tele-parachuted pollsters into the congressional district held by Dina Titus to ask a bunch of mostly old people if, given the opportunity, they would care to bitch about the government.
"You darn tootin," answered respondents who were a) contacted by the pollster and b) willing to tear themselves away from Hannity long enough to participate in the poll.
And so the poll concluded that Titus should wrap the district up in a pretty package with a big red bow and leave it on the doorstep of hack political opportunist Dr. Joe Heck. Specifically, voters want Titus to vote against the health care bill and "start over," like Sean said.
"Members of Congress would be well advised to listen to their constituents' concerns," warned Bruce Josten, who receives a very handsome salary and benefits package (including health coverage) from the Chamber of Commerce to lie for a living.
The Chamber poll is just another drip in a steady stream of annoying ads and even more annoying admonitions from the right warning the Democrats that whatever they do they better not pass a health care bill or they'll get beat come November. It is a classic example of an old axiom that's been referenced on this little website more than a few times: As a rule, which is to say not in every instance but with an impressive and surprising frequency, whenever people in politics say something, the opposite is true.
That's not to say that if Titus votes for the health care bill she'll sail to reelection. But if Democrats fail to pass a health care bill they won't be taken seriously by anyone, anywhere, because they'll be big fat losers. And you know what low-information voters in swing congressional districts hate even more than the modest health care bill that they couldn't describe accurately even if their beloved guns were held to their muddled noggins? Losers.
People are such low information voters in that district that they will assume she has voted "yes" even if she votes "no."

Name: I'm afraid you're right. Hope Titus can pull through this year.

I heard the robocall, which is fact-free and over the top inflammatory, maybe enough to turn off moderate-leaning non-partisan voters. I'm just glad I intercepted it because it would have upset my mom, a true-blue Roosevelt Democrat.
But its creator, Citizens United Political Victory Fund, isn't all bad. They endorsed Sharron Angle for Senate. So sorry Tark, everyone knows you are just a wannabe wackadoodle. I know the Reid camp is all set to educate the general election voters about Lowden, but they could easily switch gears to Angle.
Happygirl, I believe Titus will win, given a huge grassroots effort. Joe Heck is not a good campaigner and will rely entirely on lying ads paid for by out of state conservative groups. He had about five people, probably all family members, to represent him at the St. Patrick's Day Parade.

Oh, voting no would be an incredibly shrewd political move. Consider what would happen if Dina flipped and voted "no":
Simultaneous thought of 50,000 CD3 teabaggers: "Gee, I was really wrong about Dina Titus being a socialist Commie. She voted against that bill, so by God, she's got my support in November."
Joe Heck: "After that incredibly responsible vote, how could I possibly challenge Dina Titus? I hereby endorse Dina, and hope the district votes for her unanimous re-election."
Dina wins with 95% of the vote.
Of course, there are those naysayers who claim that Republicans would vote against her even if she gave them 90% tax cuts and voted to re-name Carson City after Reagan -- and that she'd simply tick off her base and make re-election far less likely. Such people are just Gloomy Guses, if you ask me.

And on the plus side, those moronic ads are a dandy bit of economic stimulus for Jim Rogers.

Happygirl-
She will. And Reid will. We can make sure of it. :-)
Terry-
So you were also at the Henderson St. Patty's Day Parade? I marched with Team Titus on Saturday, and we REALLY had a good crowd with us. Take a look for yourself.
Oh, and btw everyone, The New York Times is now counting Dina as a "Yes" on HCR. Let's hope they're right!

"It is a classic example of an old axiom that's been referenced on this little website more than a few times: As a rule, which is to say not in every instance but with an impressive and surprising frequency, whenever people in politics say something, the opposite is true."
That is so true, Gleanster. But here's something else about that though. If Republicans are convinced voting yes for health care reform will destroy any and all hopes for any Democrat to be re-elected, why don't they just stand back and let the Democrats vote yes? The answer is obvious. They can see the handwriting on the wall. That is NOT a good strategy to follow. It will not lead to doom for any Democrat for voting yes. And they know that.
I am pretty sure Representative Titus will vote yes. Why? Not because of voting along party lines or seeking votes to get re-elected. Because of one thing: She can't take the chance of being on the wrong side of history.
Sometime in the future, when it is referred to in history books, I'm pretty sure Representative Titus don't want to be listed as the lone Democrat voting against health care reform; a comprehensive bill that ensures that health care is not a privilege, but an inalienable right for all Americans. I'm sure she don't want to be on that list as one who voted no. Republicans already have a lock on that. And I'm sure Representative Titus don't want to join the ranks of knuckleheads like John Boehner and Michelle Bachman.
The President said he needs courage. I say Representative Titus has it. And she will show it.
Just my opinion. And I don't work for her or have a vested interest in anything.
I just want to see health care reform pass for everyone.
I am retired military and have a good health care plan. And I am a cancer survivor. I was taken care of. My insurance ensured I didn't go into debt for the rest of my life.
My questions in this whole equation is simple: Why can't people get what I have and be taken care of? Why can't we, as members of a country that has the longest lasting form of Government in the world, ensure that our people are taken care of? Why are the sick and unhealthy thought of as inconsequential?
I want this fixed. NOW. Time for talk is over. Backs against the wall, Democrats. None of this "one foot on the platform, one foot on the train" stuff. Let's get this done.

Adleft: Really do hope YOU are right, too.
Given the anti-incumbent mood in this country -- combined with low-info voters, the GOP echo chamber and the Democrats' incredible ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, I'm not taking anything for granted.
All I know is this: This state cannot afford to be represented by any more totally worthless lawmakers, a la John Ensign and Jim Gibbons. We've suffered enough embarassment due to those two losers.
Posted by: Happygirl | 03/17/2010 at 05:58 PM
Let's see. Dina Titus has never held a real job in her life. That's according her to her bio. She went from college to working at a college. Yep, that's understanding what real people go through. Teaching political science? Oh, she must have worked real hard for that degree and job. Joe Heck actually has a real job and actually works for a living.
Titus is worthless, like Reid, ensigm, Gibbons and Berkley.
Posted by: Dan | 03/17/2010 at 10:18 PM
"Joe Heck actually has a real job and actually works for a living."
But in the public sector, too! So according to this definition, he has never had a real job in his life. That's according to his bio. I thought Republicans didn't like "big guv'mint".
"Dina Titus has never held a real job in her life."
That's right, educating future generations doesn't count. Teaching doesn't count. Americans don't need that silly "edu-ma-caeshin"... That's why we're doing so great in Las Vegas right now.
OK, enough of the GOoPer troll for now.
Happygirl-
"Given the anti-incumbent mood in this country"
That can instantly change... And as Colin said above, I think it will once they pass health care reform and they start selling it smartly. I know it was a disaster in 1994, but that was because they didn't get anything passed and they didn't do a good job in making it easy to understand.
It looks like Obama, Reid, and Pelosi are learning from those mistakes, so I'm hopeful that Reid and Titus can explain their support for HCR sufficiently to voters here. And once the voters here understand, I don't think they'll want to choose Republicans out to undo everything.

Dan, you asshole, being a college professor is work...judging from your statement it appears you'd have no idea of the 'work' involved to teach idiots like you.
Posted by: Rich | 03/18/2010 at 09:06 AM
@Dan: Have you ever written a book, taught a university class, learned every nuance of a major issue like nuclear waste or crafted and passed bipartisan legislation? Have you ever answered questions without notes or backup for an hour? Have you ever won an election for anything?
All of your posts are intellectually lazy, just cut and paste from whatever rants hit yout inbox that morning.

If I were Dina Titus, I would be tempted to vote no on the current health bill. It's a bad bill. The insurance companies will be the big winners.
There will be some benefits for the average person. For example, local historian Michael Green wrote in to the Gleaner blog in support of the bill, saying that it bans insurance companies from disqualifying policyholders who have a pre-existing condition. (This insurance company policy in effect prevents people from changing jobs).
That's all true, but there's some important "fine print" in the legislation: insurance companies can still void your policy for "fraud": Meaning that if you fail to inform them of a pre-existing condition, then it's fraud and your policy is null and void. What if your pre-existing condition is not related to your health problem? E.g., you have a deformed toe, and when you have a stroke and big medical bills, the insurance company can void your policy because you forgot to tell them about your toe.
What if you didn't even know about the pre-existing condition? Too bad, your policy can be voided anyway.
I wouldn't be surprised if insurance companies, faced with a patient with big bills, get physicians to carry out a battery of tests. Most tests will find "false positives" a certain percentage of the time, on healthy individuals. So if you run enough tests, you're likely to come up with some evidence of some sort of pre-existing condition. Bingo! Insurance company cries fraud, and your policy is canceled.
Oh, one final cute thing: The provision that bans insurance companies from ruling out health care because of pre-existing conditions? That provision doesn't become effective until 2014. So if you have a pre-existing condition, don't plan on changing jobs until 2014 or later.

Folks, don't bother with Dan. He's worthless -- and we all know that whoring one's self for the GOP must eat away at his soul.
Go home, Dan. You're not welcome here.
Posted by: Happygirl | 03/18/2010 at 01:46 PM
Gee Happygirl, I haven't been banned yet, so go f--k yourself, you may enjoy it.
And no, I don't consider being a college professor a real job. Yes, they had to study to get the job. But have they worked a real job? A job where they sweat? A job where they may get hurt? The only injury Titus could suffer is a broken nail.
Titus cannot relate to the casino worker, the person who collects garbage, the person who works in a warehouse or works in a restaurant. She has no clue about working double shifts to make ends meet. But she can write a good paper, I suppose and how many classes a week does she teach? 3? maybe 5? Wow, what a tough work schedule.
Titus fooled a lot of people with her accent and that's about it. She is worthless.
Posted by: Dan | 03/18/2010 at 09:54 PM
So Dan, you propose eliminating all higher education in Nevada and forcing the professors to break rocks for a living? Your premise is just silly. Do tell us, what's your job?
Posted by: Tailspinterry | 03/18/2010 at 10:44 PM
Dan: GO FUCK YOURSELF, ASSHOLE.
Burn in hell, while you're at it.
Keep posting all you want, scumbag. No one has any use for what you say, you worthless, GOP fuck-face whore.
Posted by: Happygirl | 03/19/2010 at 01:51 PM
Oh and Dan, I'm willing to bet my tax dollars go to pay for your sorry-ass parents' Medicare and Social Security.
They should have aborted you.
Drop dead, motherfucker.
Posted by: Happygirl | 03/19/2010 at 01:52 PM
Abortion is too good for this motherfucker. His mother should have spit out his fathers load.
Posted by: Stan | 03/24/2010 at 04:48 PM
Stan: You could also be referring to Ensign and Gibbons with that comment.
Titus is head and shoulders above those dishonest adulterers.
(Last time I checked, she never A.) assaulted anyone in a parking lot or flew a lover over to Washington, D.C., most likely on the taxpayers' dime; or B.)who runs to his mommy and daddy to pay off a lover.
But of course, certain GOP whores who post here (his name is not worth mentioning) will just slag Titus or any Democrat -- for any reason whatsoever -- while faintly criticizing truly unacceptable garbage like Gov. Rapist and the lowlife junior "senator."
These posters think they fool us with their "independent" streak, but their boring, right-wing echo chamber talking points do not impress.
And Republicans wonder why so few take them seriously any more.
Give me a break.
