The Gleaner forgot to glean my ass toot observations of Nevada's "conservatism:"

*You can buy alcohol and drink 24 hours a day 7 days per week, including Kwanza.
*Prostitution is legal in 15 of 17 counties and in the other two, is strongly encouraged.
*Marriage is so well protected and revered by "conservatives" that you can begin it in a drive through by an overweight, former rock star/movie star and end it faster than you can in any state in the union (but you can't do either constitutionally if you posses similar genitalia with your spouse.)
*Gaming (that's gambling without a B) is extremely legal and Amsterdam blushes at what we call “nightclubs.”
*We have an African-American on the City Council and the County Commission.
*There are 4.5 gay elected officials in the State.
*We let the mentally handicapped publish the largest newspaper in the State.
*The best Thai food in town is next to the largest swinger's club in town.
*Our Governor is a sex machine.

AND, THAT, coupled with Gleaner's electoral analysis, is why Nevada is not the conventional "conservative" state.

We are "Western Conservative," meaning we like our whores, our booze, our poker, and our guns, but we hate taxes, gay people, and any government that is helping someone else. (And I’ll bet by next November, Nevadan’s will hate Harry Reid’s opponent more than they hate Harry Reid!!)

Hugh,

1. Thank you for your blog; less I take you for granted, "thank you".

2. What happened in 2008 is a reflection of a lot of work by out of state supporters for Obama. Period. That level of free labor is infrequent and non-replacative[sp].

3. If one mixes the Right wing tendencies of 16 Northern counties with 1 (albeit, LARGE), Southern county, I believe it is fair to argue that Nevada, as a whole, is a toss up. In other words, if a glass is 70% filled with Coca Cola (Clark County) and is topped off w/ 30% 7-Up (the Northern County population), you may think the resultant drink is mostly Coca Cola....but that is not how the votes fall. One has to look at the percentage of Republican turnout relative to Democratic turn out to determine what the drink will taste like.

4. Too often, those demographics that most benefit from Left public policy don't show up at the polls and leave their benefactors swinging in the wind. Dumb.

5. The Rural's don't know, or don't acknowledge, that taxpayers from other areas support their "go it alone" lifestyle and continue to vote Right. (I will post more on Heller, who is against taxpayer bailout and federal involvement in health care, earmarking millions for rural hospitals tomorrow).

That is enough: Don't want to Bogart column inches.

Thanks, Gleaner, for putting the conventional wisdom to the test. And finding that it's more conventional than wisdom.

You might have added: the culinary union is the largest private-sector union local in the country. They're not right-leaning. And they terminated the political career of Sue Lowden once already.

Also: although gay marriage is against the Nevada constitution, civil unions are now legal as of Nov. 2008.
