When members of Congress go to jail, it's usually accompanied by a bloodletting of sorts wherein other elected officials renounce all the campaign cash they have received from their newly imprisoned colleague, and make commensurate donations to a charity for the troops or whatever.
Well, those non-profit do-gooders will be rolling in dough when John Ensign gets frog-marched to the big house, if an analysis from the Center for Responsive Politics is any indication.
Since his dad bought him a ticket to Washington in 1994, Ensign has funneled $661,000 into the coffers of current or former lawmakers. "Only 12 other senators, past or present, have given more money through their leadership PACs and only nine senators have contributed more money through their candidate committees," CRP reports.
Finally, something Ensign is good at.
So where'd get Ensign get all that money in the first place? No, not from his father. Well, not directly anyway. Needless to say the biggest contributors to Ensign's campaign warchest over the years can be traced back to the industry for which little Johnny Casino is named.
Everyone already knew that local gambling-tourism industry executives have bankrolled Hairdo McWedgeshot's political hobby and are thus more responsible than anyone else for his "career." Nothing new there.
But perhaps we should use the CRP report as an opportunity to extend a note of gratitude to the local industry poohbahs. So again and as always, area gambling executives, thank you so very, very much.
I say let Ensign have more free time to golf -- it's all he's good for.

I just watched our esteemed Sen. Ensign, the voice of the Nevada people, the one who was elected to represent us, appear before the Finance Committee and vote no. He chose to follow the Republican Party line of saying no to everything. Even to health care for everyone.
No, wait, I take that back. After the vote was over, the Republicans all ran for microphones to get sound bytes in there. That's the only time I saw them spur into action regarding health care reform. They like to say no and jump in front of microphones and cameras.
Also, earlier this week, he spoke to a CNN reporter on the street and told her that basically he was going to do his job.
Exactly what job is that, Mr. Ensign? Screwing staffers? Which one of the big five health care companies lines your pockets with money? Does this mean you are obliged to show up and say no to anything and everything? Besides bad sexual escapades which prove to be an embarassment to Nevada and maybe even criminal charges pending for political ethics, all I see is he does what all the other idiot Republicans are doing. Say no, screw the people and don't come up with any other ideas about health reform.
Let me remind you, Mr. Ensign, the idea is to save peoples' lives and foster financial stability, not further the Republican Party's total inability to act or do anything.
But that's okay, asshole. You keep doing your inactivity thing. You made my decision easier in 2010 (or any upcoming election). When I see your name (or any other Republican's name) on the ballot, it's going to be an easy no brainer choice for me. It's MY turn to say no. I'LL be the one who is just doing his job as a voter in the Sovereign State of Nevada. And I won't come up with any ideas on how you idiots can fix your dumb ass party. You're on your own. And by my vote, I will prove INVALUABLE to helping people live with some kind of health reform in the United States. By getting to the root of the problem and getting rid of you. You're gone, knucklehead.
But I will give you this.... Once you idiots in the Republican Party can give the people anything worth a damn, then you're going to keep getting a negative response from me.
You're from the Party of No. Well, when it comes to anything GOP right now, consider me the Voter of No. Because you offer absolutely nothing. You give no hope to anyone at all.
Also, you'd be surprised to find out how many other Nevada voters all think like me too.
