| Presidential race swings back to Nevada »
- First it was the Paultard and the Muthtard. Then it was Jim and Dawn. Now it's Bruce James and John Mason (KLAS, RJ). Is there no end to the bizarre, tawdry and hilariously entertaining spats between creepy War Party wingnuts 'round here? Here's hoping the answer is no.
- Overpaid War Party apparatchik Pete Ernaut in the Reno paper: "The divorce and some of the other things present challenges, but I believe his re-electability is going to be more defined by how he handles the budget crisis and the dire issues facing the 2009 Legislature." So, the political future of the nation's worst governor hinges on whether Democrats in the Legislature stand up to him? Lucky sonofabitch.
- Separate overpaid War Party apparatchik (can't swing a cat in this state without hitting one) Ryan Erwin in the same story: "If the divorce reveals personal trust issues of significant proportions, it will not help him." Well, the extramarital affair that the governor definitely isn't having still isn't news. Lucky sonofabitch.
- Anybody know who's doing Dawn's PR? They're awfully good. RJ
Gibbons seems to continue his central casting calls for his comedy show "ONE fucked-up NEVADA."
Seriously, if one is known by the friends they keep and appoint (and according to today's R-J column by it's ethically challanged by association editor, Mitchell, one is thus known), then Gibbons continues to demonstrate that he is does not know one person in this state that is not some kind of hoodlum!
Even if Gibbons was technically competent, and I think the aforementioned swung cat would put him to shame on running this state, he is still ergegiously challenged on the character issue. He should be classified as fatally flawed save for the crazy "us versus them" civil war mentality that the aforementioned apparatchiks have spent decades fostering.
Erwin, or however he wants to spell his name on any given day, is thus, according to Mithchell's logic, a concern to honest people everywhere, too.

"So, the political future of the nation's worst governor hinges on whether Democrats in the Legislature stand up to him"
OK, Hugh. What would YOU do if you were Speaker? Rather than cheap snark, howzabout you put out some concrete IDEAS. How would you increase revenue? What would you cut? What would you not cut - coupled with what would then cut more to make up for it?

I'd look at all those corporate welfare tax-exemptions, like those waived for the R-J and the materials they use. Then I'd go after all those pork projects in the North, like the Alfalfa seed commission. Just look at all the pork Raggio et al gave to the North. Tax mining, and make businesses pay their fair share. Finally, I'd turn the Governor's Mansion into a tourist attraction, with exhibits like: The Parking Garage Groper's Interactive Activity; The How to Hide Casino Chips Maze; The What Health Care Crisis Panorama; and finally my favorite... Hide the Illegal Nanny in the Basement while reports are on the way over display.

What about the rumors that Jim Gibbons has a mistress? For that matter, what do you suppose happened during the 10 years that Jim was a CongressCritter in Washington DC while Dawn was back in Nevada. Did both of them take vows of chastity?
Gleaner, why don't you start up a betting pool on the FIRST NAME of Jim Gibbons' mistress. First prize is a year's free online subscription to Las Vegas Gleaner website.

Sadly, I don't think standing up to Gibbons would do too much for the legislature. It's like Congress. We can complain all we want, but it takes 60 senators to stop debate for a vote and then 2/3 to override a veto. The housing bill in the House won't get anywhere, for example, if that pathetic excuse for a human being in the White House wants to veto it and his fellow haters in the House and Senate won't do anything. Similarly, if Barbara Buckley doesn't have a veto-proof majority in the Assembly and now if Steven Horsford doesn't have one in the Senate, Gibbons could pretty much get his way ... unless he gets the indictment and conviction he probably deserves.

By the way, I should have added a couple of things.
One is that anyone who reads The Gleaner knows that Hugh does not just knock but has his own ideas about what to do. Gleaning The Gleaner shows that.
The other is my crusade, which I make with apologies to friends of mine in northern and rural Nevada, because I would rather not put it this way. But DEMOCRATS don't need to stand up to Gibbons. The CLARK COUNTY DELEGATION does. This county has more than 2/3 of the membership of the legislature. That is enough to override a veto. Nevada doesn't need Bruce James (or any of his good friends or enemies, for that matter) trying to figure out how to eliminate such waste as education (part of which Bob Beers wants eliminated). We need to slam through what we want and need here, override Gibbons when he tries to block it, and that's that.

Hate to have a North-South War, but Green is correct.
Sixteen Counties supported Gibbons over Titus (they thought her name was Dina Taxes). The cow counties are virulent anti-tax, live and let live, self sufficient types. Right?
I wonder if anyone has any idea of the revenue amounts these sixteen counties contribute to the state as relates to the revenue Clark County contributes? Next, what is the total disbursement of state funds to these sixteen counties compared to Clark County?
What is the gross amount of federal dollars poured into these sixteen counties compared to the federal tax liability of same?
My hunch is that these sixteen counties take in far more federal and state dollars than they produce. If this hypothesis is proven correct could the data be published statewide and thus end once and for the illegitimate concept that all that the cow counties are not sucking on the teat of others and thus put an end the denial of their dependence on others?

Bruce james gave $2,500 to soon to be indicted? Don Young of Alaska. Too, he's a big backer of Porter ($2,300 9/2007) and Gibbons.
Once again, a campaign contributor to Governor Gibbons is given an un-elected seat of power over Nevada's citizens. Man, talk about "pay-to-play"!
Never mind the amount of money James has donated to Nevada State Republic Party committees. Gee, no bias in this guy! No, none. Clean sheet. Tabula Rosa.

Dave, I agree--I don't want a north-south war. But it's time we started asking why, for example, Bob Beers has wanted to cut UNLV's budget but hasn't said anything about UNR. Of course, he wants to get rid of higher education anyway, but the question of whether your party or constituency matters more needs to be asked.

Bruce was a large donor of Mitt Romney's too,
