Wuss
Both Las Vegas papers ran stories Saturday about how Dawn Gibbons has emasculated her cowardly husband by kicking his sorry ass out of the governor's mansion while she still lives there, even though he's the one who is supposed to be the governor. (Sun, RJ)
Perhaps after Willard's speech on jihad (he's for some of them; against others) and before the mid-afternoon animal sacrifice and incantation ceremonies, the attendees at Saturday's Nevada Republican Convention might ask Gov. Wimpy McPantywaste why somebody who claims to be such a flaming conservative fuckwit is standing around with his finger up his butt while his cash-strapped state spends to provide lavish government-subsidized public housing to his estranged wife.
But it being the "War Party" and all, what might be of even more concern to the thoughtless militarists, gun nuts, churchy zealots keen on the End o' Times and other assorted paranoid basketcases and ideological extremists at the convention is what all this means in our Glorious War on Terror.
It has generally been assumed that history would remember Jim Gibbons mostly, if at all, for slamming a woman up against a parking garage and telling her to put out or else — exactly the sort of decisiveness that Republicans want and expect from a chief executive.
But for the governor to let his wife run roughshod over him raises serious questions about whether the governor is in fact a "strong leader" with the courage to put his nation's interest first — if he can't stand up to his batshit crazy wife, why should he be expected to stand up to the evildoers?
By beating a path of defeat and retreat from territory that every legal authority recognizes as his and letting his wife make a fool and an ass of him, publicly and at public expense, no less, the sad sack of a governor is showing weakness, a lack of resolve and a willingness to surrender. And that is not the message that we need to be sending either to our Islamofascist enemies who want to destroy our freedoms or to our troops in the field.

So I guess we didn't need that terrorism center in Carson after all.

I'm sure any of the several hundred thousand Nevadans facing foreclosure, or who have already lost their homes, and have gotten from the state nothing but a dopey ad and a useless website -- would like to ask what precisely Dawn Gibbons has done to deserve a luxury mansion at state expense?
I'd love to see any of our intrepid reporters ask her if she intends to reimburse the tax-payers for the cost of keeping her in the style to which she's become accustomed, since obviously the residential part of the mansion is not an essential function of state government.

Ah, but the mansion is her political tool now... tell me there's no great event going on there as she ascends the thrown to National Committeewoman! They just can't figure out how to throw that into a divorce settlement, maybe they need a new legal fund, no?

So, is the Governor in violation of his oath of office?
NRS 223.040 Office and residence. The Governor shall keep his office and reside at the seat of government.
[Part 10:108:1866; B § 2608; BH § 1645; C § 1791; RL § 2774; NCL § 4774]
Reno is NOT the seat of government, Carson City is. Now what?
Oh, it cost $406,000 a year to run the place with 5 full time employees; Is Dawn our Evita or is she Joan?

I am wondering why we have yet to hear on the subject of maintaining a governor's mansion for the exclusive use of the governor's wife from Republicans, who are of course foes of all wasteful government spending, while we Democrats are known for blowing money endlessly. You know, that must be why we blow billions in Iraq. Maybe that's it: Republicans are too busy right now plotting how to murder more American soldiers.

I understand that the Republican Convention in Reno was gaveled to a close when it looked like the Ron Paul supporters were going to take over. Heard anything about that?

I don't have a beef with Dawn being in the mansion. She's still the first Lady and she's doing her job. Kick him to the curb the lying, cheating no good scoundrel. But $742,000 to maintain the mansion for the current fiscal year and next year? Why in the world does it cost 371,000 a year to maintain the mansion. Taxpayers are buying the equivalent of almost 3 new $250,00 homes every two years for maintaining that place. Can't Jim cut the grass and Dawn dust and clean and just call in for service like other people. I think we should bombard Raggio and demand to know why there has not been a major cut here. This really needs to be investigated.

I just read the news account on the Republican convention. LOL. Way to go Ron Paul supporters! It appears Romney's not in the loop about accepted Bush terminology for the war on the terror. He says McCain is the" man who knows how to help us defeat radical jihadists .. in the war on terror." According to the Bush playbook jihadist is no longer an acceptable term although torture is an acceptable act.

Actually....in this time of severe financial crisis we should be grateful to the gubber for demonstrating that the mansion is functionally obsolute and state government can function without it.
Turn the thing into a high-end B&B or put it up on the auction block or whatever. We really don't need it any more.

It's unclear how enforcement of the NRS would come about. Since they are still technically married, her residing there while they do the divorce lead-up seems acceptable.
She shouldn't even be there if they've already filed though. The NVAG should ask her to leave if he/she has filed, and sue to remove her if necessary. Is there a Bobby G in Carson City? LOL!
He doesn't have to reside in state paid housing, despite the law. You can't compel a person to live somewhere, regardless of being codified in law and the courts would likely concur. Several govs pass on this if they live close to their capitols and commute. Some just don't like living in big houses paid for by taxpayers. I don't know of any Gov being sanctioned for not living in state paid housing
If the gov doesn't want to live there, then staff should be laid off, and only custodial duties performed when needed.
If Dawn has filed, then she should leave. If they are merely separated, there's not much we can do.
Madame AG should look into this though.

I truly think old Gov. Wussy caved into her because she has some evidence on the charges made against him in Vegas. I would bet she is holding that over his head to get what she wants.
That whole so-called investigation in Vegas was a sham and most saw through it and involved the ex Sheriff in Vegas. Alot of heads would roll and a reinvestigation would be called for if she released what she knows or has evidence of regarding the charges her dear hubby was brought up on.
She wanted that govenorship probably more that old wussy so strings were pulled from higher powers to get him in.
And look what it has gotten all of us! He undid all the good Gov. Quinn did for this state. When you put crap in office you get crappy results. We've seen it in Washington over the last 7 yrs.

Let me guess.... When Bill Clinton admitted that he let a teen-age intern give him a blowjob in Oval Office, you probably said it didn't matter, that he was still a good leader and his sexual pecadillos had nothing to do with his leadership abilities. Is that a good guess???
So WTF does Gibbons marital problems have to do with the price of tea in China?

Well, gee,...who's going to be there to answer that 3am phone call when Nevada is overrun with terrorists? Oh, I see; the gubber has call forwarding. And how will he get from Reno to the CC bunker that absolutely had to be built? Oh, I see; in the inconspicuous state limo.
Maybe, just maybe, the bunker was built for Dawn's paranoia and that's the reason she won't give up the mansion.
And maybe, just maybe, the gubber pulled a Bill Clinton and got caught at it.

Bill actually closed the deal, Jim didn't. Sorry to be crass but this just illustrates how Jim is totally inept, incompetent, and incapable in practically every area of his life, his career, and his contributions as governor. Are you always so dense, Dave 202; you're starting to sound like Bob Beers... chairman of a fail state convention, where he couldn't control, and had to leave the meeting room with his tail between his legs. He too is a Jim apologist, both men in way over there heads.

their heads.... oooops
Posted by: KidFromVegas | 04/27/2008 at 06:08 PM
MZ...law says governor has to reside at seat of government. Doesn't require him to live in the mansion. You mentioned that, "You can't compel a person to live somewhere, regardless of being codified in law"; he's not being complelled, he agreed to reside in Carson City as part of his oath of office...if he disagrees, he can resign.

What if Dawn barricades herself in the Governor's mansion and refuses to leave? Will Jim call in the repo man? a SWAT team? Airstrikes?
While Jim has military superiority, Dawn has possession of the strategic mansion, and we all know that possession is 9/10 of the law.
The precedent here is a case in Maryland in 1974, when governor Marvin Mandel divorced his wife. He moved out of the mansion, but she refused to leave. A lengthy standoff ensured. Eventually she surrendered, but not after extorting him to a more generous settlement.
Hey Dawn, if you are reading this, check out the famous youtube video by Trish Walsh Smith, soon-to-be-ex-wife of a Broadway producer. The URL is
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQ5tM5Y35LM
Over 3 million people have viewed the video, more than the population of Nevada. It's her way of getting her side of the story out to the public. Also a threat to keep releasing more embarrassing videos unless she gets a better divorce settlement. Yes, it's extortion.
Dawn, record your own youtube video.
Inquiring minds want to know!

True, but there's also an argument that wherever the gov and legislature are is the seat of government. It's one of those arcane laws that must have been written when 12 people lived here and you had to come off the ranch to the capitol.
On the other subject, the GOP's problems are nothing to gloat over. These things are enormously tough to run, and this year, both parties are deluged with activists and that really complicates things.
We have our own event to get behind us next month and hopefully we'll have a better run event than they did.
Primary from now on, and maybe even elect delegates on the same ballot, and we solve it all for 2012.
The logistics alone are insane, as well as insanely expensive.
Posted by: MikeZ | 04/27/2008 at 09:21 PM
MZ's right Nevada voters will agree to have taxpayers pay for a primary-NOT.We can't even get people to pay for education much less for a primary- ain't going to happen for a dang long time. By the way we're up 50,000 voters over the Republicans. Another first for Nevada.
Posted by: kickboxermomma | 04/28/2008 at 12:12 AM
That's why I support the zero-sum approach; moving the August primary to January in prez years only. That way we maximize what we spend for the useless August effort.
All the big states do this. Everyone is on the ballot.
Registrations are impressive, but its GOTV and getting the NP's to us that win NV in Nov.
Posted by: MikeZ | 04/28/2008 at 06:30 AM
MZ, the seat of government is defined by law (maybe even in constitution). Arcane? Most every state (i've done some research), required the chief executive to reside at the seat of government, i.e., the capital area...for very logical reasons ("dude, it's near the fushion center")
Its a violation of the law and it should be publicized.
Posted by: | 04/28/2008 at 07:44 AM
I have no idea where your paper is getting it's information from but it is libelist propaganda. I know for a fact that Dawn did not throw the governor out of the mansion. He left on his own accord and chose to live in Reno. Dawn has every right to remain in the mansion as first lady. For your information, the governor or his wife are not required by law to live in the mansion in the first place.
