| Can't swing a medically stapled cat 'round here without ... um, never mind »
- The Washington Post does a little profile of the worst, least relevant, most corrupt and creepiest governor in These United States. The big beltway paper couldn't shoe-horn in all the fun ... so much to say, so few column inches, etc. For instance, nannygate is conspicuous in its absence. As is the fact that Gibbons' very first official statement to the people of Nevada as governor was a lie (sworn in at midnight to thwart the evildoers, 'member?). And the twerp's default response -- in that instance and in the Trepp kickback scandal and beyond - in which Gibbons references war or troops and generally comports himself as a scoundrel invoking patriotism not as his last refuge, but his first, is a singularly malodorous trait which, frankly, we think could have really made the Post story sing and turned it into something special instead of just a serviceable overview. Oh well. Attention from the grown-up media is always nice. And now the rest of the nation knows that Gibbons has nailed down the support of the all-important and influential in-state Republican apologetic political science professor lobby.
- The R-J clutters up it's site a little (and seems to be having a bit o' trouble posting in a timely fashion as part of the bargain), which seems to be a rule among Nevada dailies. But the R-J now allows comments on stories. So where are you people? Only three (as of Monday a.m.) comments on the paper's really quite nice rundown over the weekend of Dawn's creative revenue model? You'd think nobody cared. (UPDATE: Site redesign appears to still have some bugs in it; now the comment function seems to disappear/reappear. Whatever.)
- And is anyone ever going to comment on a Sun political story?
- Other items of interest appearing in area mainstream media outlets over the weekend include but are not limited to:
- Nina Totenberg has heard of Gibbons' lawyer, too (Sun);
- Ralston, in an entertaining way, continues inching toward the recall Gibbons bandwagon;
- caucus fever -- catch it -- but not until you read these 45 pages from your Nevada Democratic Party;
- speaking of the NVDems, who won the exciting and controversial race for second vice assistant chair to the deputy commissar or whatever it was that somebody was nattering on about , anyway? (RGJ);
- U.S. attorney's Rove-inspired, Gonzales-approved ouster a conspiracy or screw-up? Neff wonders aloud while connecting an intriguing series of dots in aid of promoting the former;
- Brian Greenspun uses bimonthly homage to his sainted father Hank to complain about Modern Times;
- if we set a timeline for withdrawal, we're sending a signal to the Mormon crickets that the U.S. is weak in its resolve and can be defeated. Sun
- Yes, how about that poopy subprime meltdown? Alas, mortgage exotica is the only way a median-income household has been able to own a home 'round here of late, even in the softening market. So, the housing situation: dysfunctional, or farce? NVToday
- Hillary Clinton has more money than you do; Edwards hanging around. Post
The NYT picked up the Gibbons article on Saturday, along with a pretty awesome picture. It's available with a "Gibbons" search on the NYT website. Nice for Nevada to get so much national play.

I'm of the belief that it is impossible to say "Mormon crickets are a huge problem in Nevada" with a strait face. Seriously, it’s hilarious every time.
I am also completely despondent at the quality reporting we received over the weekend. Neff, Smith, & Ralston all bring the goods? That is the trifecta people. Now what do we have to complain about?
Posted by: Pedo | 04/02/2007 at 08:55 AM
Pedo (or is it Pedro?) The RGJ is pretty reliable.
Both the Neff and Ralston columns were surprising. Where the hell were they with this stuff during the election? All they wanted to talk about was how unpopular Dina Titus was.
Posted by: IronJawed | 04/02/2007 at 09:12 AM
True IJ. Although I do remember them talking about what a dumb-ass Gibbons was as well.
To be fair, those are pretty accurate portrayals; Titus is annoying and unpopular, and Gibbons is a bumbling dumb-ass.
Posted by: Pedro or Pedo or P-didro | 04/02/2007 at 09:23 AM
"To be fair"? Hardly. Why do you think that about Titus? Because she is smart and female? Perhaps it's because she is "articulate and clean"?
Why do I hear Mormon crickets?
Posted by: IronJawed | 04/02/2007 at 09:55 AM
Pedro,
Just why do Nevadans find Dina annoying and unpopular? I've known Dina quite well and I'm dazzled by her brilliance, overwhelmed with her intelligence, I totally repect her E concerns, and I find her to be a charming, brilliant person with a wonderful southern drawl. Why are Nevadans so afraid of a powerful, intelligent and caring woman? When I compare Dina to Gibbons I see a bushel of diamonds vs a bag of Bandini manure, a snake pit of stupidity and corruption and a non-working brain. Are you aware of the bills Senator Titus has recently submitted? I've read them and they're all about the issues that concern as all.
I'm not trying to start an argument. I'd really like to know where you are coming from.

The new on-line edition of the R-J is a mess. Is there even a political story in today's R-J?
Posted by: What?! | 04/02/2007 at 10:18 AM
Well said Jaded. Here's a list of Titus' bills:
Bills Listed under Titus
Bills Listed under Senate Minority Leader
Compare those to the bills that the Republicans, esp Raggio are scripting. Raggio seems to think it open season to pilfer money from the South to subsidize the North. For example, did you know that UNR gets more state money that UNLV even though UNLV has more enrollments? It's insane. Southern Nevada is hurting, and the governor and his buddies think its all fun and games. "Let's see how much we can get from the South and for our buddies and not get caught, or wake the sleeping dragon - Southern Nev voters."
Thank G-d for Titus and Buckley.
Posted by: IronJawed | 04/02/2007 at 10:30 AM
I'm not sure why the majority of voting Nevadans find Titus so unpopular. But I am certain that most do.
As for my self, I like her politics, find her leadership style obtuse, can stand her voice or speeches, but admire her gusto. I'm somewhat familiar with her work in the senate and admire that as well.
You really need a new line IJ. Every time you throw out tired accusations of sexism you degrade the salience of real and observable sexism. You are slowly becoming the female version of JLA.
I wish Barbara Buckley or Jill Derby would have ran for Governor. I think both of them could have beat Gibbons. And neither of them are annoying or unpopular to boot.
Posted by: Pedro | 04/02/2007 at 10:31 AM
Pedro, I really don't think I'm being the unreasonable one here. And I don't see how pointing out sexism in one instance detracts from pointing out sexism in other instances. Your tone is both condescending and annoying.
I can answer your intended rhetorical question: "I'm not sure why the majority of voting Nevadans find Titus so unpopular." - They were constantly told in the local media and in campaign attack ads that she was annoying. These traits, however, have no basis in reality. And your lack of proof to the contrary is evidence. Anyone that's ever been led by her has found her style is anything but obtuse.
Again Pedro, to beat the "your are such an annoying feminist" drum toward me is so Rush Limbaughly arrogant of you.
Posted by: IronJawed | 04/02/2007 at 11:09 AM
Quite frankly - I deserve better than that.
Posted by: IronJawed | 04/02/2007 at 11:12 AM
"Your tone is both condescending and annoying." Thank you Geico caveman. But as you will find out in the next paragraph I cannot accept your opinion as legitimate until you empirically prove otherwise.
"They were constantly told in the local media and in campaign attack ads that she was annoying. These traits, however, have no basis in reality." Are you really trying to quantify something so subjective as the annoyance of one's character? Really? Annoying is based in fact versus fiction? I always thought it was a matter of opinion.
"I don't see how pointing out sexism in one instance detracts from pointing out sexism in other instances." That's just it IJ, you are not pointing out sexism. In fact you are not even in the same ballpark. You sound as ridiculous as Lynette Boggs McDonald claiming she was voted out of office because of racism. You do those who actually try to fight sexism a disservice when throw around that term so loosely because you have nothing else to substantiate your point.
The fact that you interpret my opinion of Dina Titus and contend that I "beat the you-are-such-an-annoying-feminist drum" really says quite a bit about your own insecurities. Do you call your husband a sexist every time he has a difference of opinion than you?
I must commend your loyalty to Titus. It is really quite impressive the way you take every negative view of her so very personal. Your willingness to aggressively defend every aspect of her is nothing short of amazing.
If only we had more political leaders in our country whose supporters displayed such a blind fidelity like yours.

Looks like Pedro has some bad PMS today
Posted by: | 04/02/2007 at 12:03 PM
Not to get in the middle of what always amount to quite entertaining personal spats, I can speak as someone who has no logical reason for not liking Titus. I followed little to none of the actual media coverage due to all the potential biases that can be thrown around. I still found Titus annoying. And, funny enough, I thought she was a bit condesending, too. That came from the time I participated in one of the debates. I'm sure you guys will all ove this next one - I actually liked Gibbons the couple of times I met him. It was never a political moment, but really, what isn't?
What's funny is that IJ and others here can question why someone with seemingly brilliant ideas can be so off-putting, and the sense I get from that is that it's unfair. Then, IJ drops the "your tone is condescending and annoying." If I missed the intended irony, please forgive me.
Posted by: Ryan Jerz | 04/02/2007 at 12:06 PM
Pedro, there is no reason for me to be disloyal to Titus. She is ethical and works hard for the things I believe in. To imply I blindly follow anyone is an insult to my intelligence. Is it your modus operandi to simply imply that everyone who finds fault in your reasoning is less intelligent than you are? That doesn't seem to me to be a way to have an honest discussion.
Btw, how many male candidates have been called "annoying?" No one even assigns the "A" word to Heller or Rory Ried. Look, I called you the "A" word, and you got all persnickety. If I insulted your masculinity, I apologize.
Also - if you are trully curious, I don't have these kinds of arguments with my husband. He thinks that Titus lost, in part, because of the sexist way she was portrayed in the media - by both male and female reporters.
Posted by: IronJawed | 04/02/2007 at 12:13 PM
Jerz, the irony was very much intended. It's interesting that you are still trying to put me in my place.
Posted by: IronJawed | 04/02/2007 at 12:24 PM
Jeez...the gleaner gives us a perfectly wonderful buffet of things to discuss intelligently and you guys are having a food fight over Titus and Gibbons with it.
Posted by: texex | 04/02/2007 at 12:24 PM
Rory Ried is annoying. Dina Titus is annoying.
Calling someone annoying is not an evaluation of their policy positions or political accumen, it is simply a personal judgement of the public persona they present. One's opinion that someone is annoying is not necessarily based on their gender, a therfore not sexist. However, immediately assuming that such a judgement is based on gender is highly prejudicial at best and a blatant example of sexism at worst.
I believe that the "blind loyalty" part comes in when the first response that a Titus fan has in rebuttal to some one who does not like her, is that it must be based on sexism. It is short-sighted to believe that the only problem anyone could have with Dina Titus is her gender.

Sorry, IJ. I wasn't doing it for any reason other than what I said. Besides, I did a pretty thorough job the first time. Seriously, though, it's really interesting to me that people are criticized for their tone when someone just doesn't want to talk about the things that person has said. I did miss that you meant to say it, so I thought it was pretty funny that you left yourself that open.
Posted by: Ryan Jerz | 04/02/2007 at 12:28 PM
"Is it your modus operandi to simply imply that everyone who finds fault in your reasoning is less intelligent than you are?"
No. I think that is as simplistic and naïve as calling anyone who finds Dina Titus annoying sexist.
Now excuse me while I go grab some Midol for my cramps.
Posted by: Pedro | 04/02/2007 at 12:34 PM
Jerz, a thorough job? Ha.
And the irony was intended. You have to start working on that reading comp. Also, recognize that I spoke about Pedro's "tone" when wrote "You are slowly becoming the female version of JLA." I think any normal person would find that tone condescending.
Posted by: IronJawed | 04/02/2007 at 01:16 PM
CollegeStudent, do you really think that certain adjectives like "annoying" aren't gendered in the English language? You are trying to tell me that "annoying" is not generally reserved for children and wives. You must think I am very naive.

Do we who post on the Gleaner represent the NSDP? If so, we're in deep caca. From what I've been able to gather from the name calling and innuendos - the NSDP is impotent. We have enough to complain about with what's going on, our idiot governor, the horrible conditions of the VA, Iraq vets coming home broken and no one is there to help them, Vietnam Vets are homeless, a large portion of intelligent voters are kept as second class citizens. I thought the Democratic party had principles, values and was the party of the people.
Enough BS - let's get this party together and return to our place of the party of the people. I've been equally as guilty as the next person posting on here - I promised no more propfanity but seriously, we all need to get our shit together pronto.
I want to win the big enchilada in '08 - what is displayed on these pages is sophomoric babble in most cases.
Will the Democrats ever learn? How many more times does this party have to shoot itself in the foot? I still say that all of this wonderful energy is wasted fighting among ourselves instead of going after the criminals, in both parties, who pollute the system with back room deals as exemplified by the Fox Noise fiasco.
What I saw at the CC meeting was a lot of disenfranhised Democrats...and don't hand me they should have sent in their proxies BS, etc. Remember the guy who was in New Orleans helping to clean it up for six months, who then was hospitalized and then had to attend a burial at Arlington Cemetery? My, my, my - why didn't he remember to send in a proxy that he most likely never received? How does one return a proxy they never received? Sorry but these elections prove the our fearless leader is a puppeteer and was pulling all the stings he needed to pull to get the vote to turn out according to his hignnesses wishes.
I don't know about you but I know when I've been scammed.
Posted by: Jaded | 04/02/2007 at 01:25 PM
IJ,
You've got it backwards. I don't use "annoying" to describe someone who is inferior, as you're suggesting a woman or child would be to a sexist man. I use it to project inferiority. I'd definitely use it on a man if I wanted to intentionally belittle him. If belittling someone equals making them like a woman, then whoever said you have insecurities is right.
Also, next time you go searching through my site's archives trying to find that sexost remark I've theoretically used, don't go looking for the term, "ladies." You'd have to know that I would only refer to the "ladies" in a proper fashion - broads.
