| Daily Glean: Nevada's super-secret sexy lovenest of a caucus »
- You'd think Karl Rove's shuddering at the possibility that his progeny would ever -- gasp! -- work as a housekeeper in a Las Vegas hotel, an attitude that attacks the people who work so hard toward the caring and feeding of Karl Rove while he's in Las Vegas shaking down campaign cash from the very industry that wouldn't even exist if it wasn't for those people who Rove is attacking... well, you'd think the "working press" 'round here might take an interest, maybe lob a few Rove's way. Especially after Rep. Shelley Berkley sent that letter to Rove calling him a stinky poophead, or words to that effect. But not so much. Fortunately, Doctor Green has weighed in, using Rove's attacks on the local workforce to prove once and for all how very, very little today's Republican weeners have to do with the gangly mostly inexperienced upstart from Illinois who transformed a nation (the original gangly upstart, not the one from this past weekend's headlines) and who was in on the start of their party. Fun and spot-on juxtaposition of contemporary events and historical context, ifn's yer into that sort of thing. NVToday
- Perhaps Berkley would care to send another letter, specifically, one to the poohbahs and viziers of the casino-industrial complex, pointing out to them that unless and until Rove publicly apologizes for offending the people on whose backs the aforementioned poohbahs and viziers have built not only their magnificent corporate sin palaces, but also their personal fortunes, the gambling, er, gaming industry should refrain from rendering any tribute in the form of campaign contributions to any Republican candidate for any federal, state or local office. Meantime, back in the reality based community, Berkley sure as hell isn't going to send a letter like that. If she did, casino honchos might stop sending letters like this, in which the MGM Mirage's Terry Lanni urges people to give until it hurts -- to Berkley, because she'll use her perch on Ways and Means to protect and shelter the casino industry from paying their fair share of taxes for ever and ever and ever. (RussBB, as they say in Pahrump, gracias).
- While we're on the subject (and yes we know nobody cares but us) may we point out yet again that the reason politicians have to raise so much money in the first place is so they can fork it over to His Lordship and the rest of the media moguls, minor and major, who own TV stations?
- And that, in turn, is why a line like this -- "As important as the message, experts say, is how it's delivered. Nevadans are also accustomed to seeing their candidates and elected officials up close and in person." -- in a story on the caucus thingy from the Politico, is, as a rule, silly. If it were the case, John Ensign, Jim Gibbons and Jon Porter would all be looking for gainful employment instead of making the world safe for churchy wingnuts, cronies and corporations in their capacities as Republican officewarmers. They did not run "up close and in person" campaigns. They spent the campaign on the golf course, slamming single mothers up against parking garage walls (okay, that was fairly up close and in person) and in an undisclosed location, respectively. Each one of them won not by meeting voters, but spending far more money and telling much bigger lies than their opponents in ads on the teevee. Now, having said that, while it may not mean much to a big election, the up close and in person thing could be very important to the caucus, which is expected to attract a crowd of participants numbering well into the tens.
- Before he was the worst governor in the United States, back when Jim Gibbons was in Congress, not only was nobody noticing him, he wasn't noticing what was going on. That must be why, when he and his erstwhile congressional colleagues who couldn't pick him out of a line-up voted for that national identification thing that is going to be a massive pain in the ass for everybody, not only did they go all goose-steppy with the "Achtung! Achtung! Alles will show Papiere, or else!" but they forgot to give states any money to herd the citizenry into orderly submission. Gibbons, ever the clever one, has taken quick action to rectify the situation. He sent a letter to Congress saying it would be easier for Jim Gibbons to be a governor if he didn't have to deal with laws passed by stupid congressmen like Jim Gibbons (release).
- For those who don't read the comments regularly, allow us to draw your attention to the string at the end of Monday's Daily Glean. It was commandeered for a discussion of the the public employees benefits "crisis," as the wingnuts like to call it (the back and forth starts in earnest about a half dozen comments in), and we're tempted to say it's as informative a dialog on the subject as any we've seen or heard in the state thus far but we really can't say that because we haven't been paying that much attention, now, have we? Anyway, as near as we can tell, steps must be taken, but soon, to assure that public employees spend the rest of their lives in disease-ridden poverty and misery just like the rest of us, otherwise it wouldn't be fair. Or something like that.
Why is Berkley the only Nevada congressional voice that is outraged over Rove's remark?!? Where's harry? Has anybody seen or heard from harry lately?
Here, silence is consent.

Gibbons keeps proving how irresponsible and cowardly he is. He sneaks in $250,000 for a pool in Sparks that he tried to kill frogs (or was it snakes?) in to appease his ego and actually believes that's worthy cause for other people to pay for. He votes for an unfunded mandate as Congressman so he can say he's fiscally conservative, now he can't fund as Governor what he wouldn't fund as Congressman so he's now asking Congress for the money and now it's okay because he's not in Congress taking taxpayer money to pay for it.
He puts together task forces to come up with ideas because he can't be bothered to come up with his own. Then ignores them because he doesn't like what they come up with.
Doesn't show up for work but takes the taxpayers money for it (Congress) because he says he needs time to work up a budget. Then Gibbbons says he didn't even get the budget until after he was sworn in as Govenor (due to national security reasons). Then says he didn't have enough time to make a good budget. Then the amazing technicolor budget has new ideas Gibbons knows nothing about and can't comment on. Then Gibbons says there are things in the budget he hasn't had time to take out yet.
I never thought I'd be for a recall; I thought California was crazy. I've changed my mind. This man needs to be de-throned. It's only February. How do we recall this lying, cheating, spineless idiot?

Sorry for the double post- it was unintentional - like Gibbons thinking.

Nice line, Lisa. Jimbo clearly has the right idea, though. He knows he could never be the best or smartest governor in America, so he's aiming to be the worst and dumbest. I think he's a lock!
After all, as the Mazzeo incident proved, he can't even stand the thought that Arnold groped more women than he has.

Hey, just a question/observation;
Who is the Governor?
Nevada Constitution Article 5, Sec: 12. "Person holding federal office ineligible for office of governor. No person shall, while holding any office under the United States Government hold the office of Governor, except as herein expressly provided." (I didn't notice anything following that "expressly provided").
Gibbons was a Congressman (an office under the United States Government), until noon January 3, 2007 (as set out in the 20th Amendment of the US Constitution).
A 1979 Nevada Attorney General Opinion states, "However, Article 5, [section]4 of the Nevada Constitution provides that the Governor shall hold his office for four years from the time of his installation and 'until his successor shall be qualified'". And from the next paragraph, "One of the qualifications is that he must take the oath of office...before they enter upon the duties of their respective offices'".
1. What official Governor actions did Gibbons do/enact from midnight January 1, 2007 till noon on January 3, 2007?
2. Has Gibbons taken the oath of office for Governor subsequent to Noon on January 3, 2007?
3. Is Guinn still the constitutional Governor of Nevada?

Some really good posts here this morning!
Makes me also wonder if Gibbons was double-dipping being paid from Congress and also by the State of Nevada?!? Can that be legal?!?
This could have some legs!! Get on it!!
Posted by: texex | 02/13/2007 at 11:56 AM
According to the R-J's Ed Vogel account as reported on January 3, 2007, "Gibbons actually was sworn in three times, shortly after midnight Monday [January 1, 2007] in his home in Reno, then again with the other constitutional officers at 10 a.m. that day and publicly at Tuesday's [January 2, 2007] inauguration."
...and my apology to the Gleaner for any role I played in commandering his Monday Daily Glean.

Anybody know a Constitutional Attorney that can answer whether or not Gibbons is legally Gov.? Ohhh.....ohhh... let's ask Oscar Goodman!
Or... those of you journalists that read this blog instead of researching newsy type stuff... why don't you research whether or not Gibbons was "double-dipping." I understand that's a HUGE Republican issue in this state. If so, then the head of the party should be the first one to clear this up!

Ask 'em to repay the difference to the Chrissy Legal Defese Fund....heh heh heh
Of course he was getting paid double!~! Ask the Attorney General(s) to look into it.

Foggo's been indicted. Maybe he'll rat on gibberdagrabber.
Posted by: texex | 02/13/2007 at 02:35 PM
Hugh, you need to get on this double dipping and illegal swearing in while still a US Congressman. NOW!
You've been yipping around gibber's heels for long enough. Now that you've been given something with some real substance are you going to do something with it or just keep whining that we have the dumbest, and now most illegal, governor in the nation?
Posted by: texex | 02/13/2007 at 04:28 PM
BTW, it is not now section 4 of the nevada constitution, but section 2 regarding guinn staying on as governor until gibbons does the oath without simultaneously being a congressman.

Titus now has a blog www.dinatitus.com. She might just be mildly interested in the illegal oath and the double dipping.

"Texex" said it all "Sit Down" "Shut Up" and "Hold On"...while someone else does the work of electing progressive candidates and winning on our issues?
That's the core problem, and "Texex" is a far too common example!
Too many "arm chair, posing patriots, sitting at home, and doing nothing substantially as active citizens in our fight for democracy!
All talk and no walk!
Thanks for holding my coat "Texex" - I'm never, ever responding to any of your B.S. comments again - now, not only do the activists up North know, everyone in Nevada now knows - you are a total fraud!

Pasan la palabra, hermanos e hermanas, para que las mucamas escupen en las sabanas de Karl Rove...
Pass the word, brothers and sisters, all through the industry, and all across the nation... So that hotel maids everwhere will spit in Karl Rove's sheets. Pass the word! !Vamos!
Posted by: diego277 | 02/13/2007 at 11:40 PM
Diego, how many hotel maids do you know?

Johnnie, the comment was very, very clearly directed toward the Republican members of Congress as it is the Democrats who are now in control and taking the initiative against the war had you taken the time to read and understand the entire connotation.
Again, you open mouth before engaging brain. But I understand where you're coming from as the sit down and shut up seems to be a common reaction to your obnoxious appearances at public meetings.
And thanks for not commenting in the future; i.e., sit down shut up, and hold on.
