  • The union caucus, er, Nevada caucus has "bragging rights" to the very first scheduled "face-off" between Dem prez wannabes, the Feb. 21 thing in Carson City (which is mistakenly reported as the Feb. 23 thing in this piece at CQPolitics.com), although New Hampshire could, presumably, move up its debates to be first in that department too, which seems like something New Hampshire would do. Meantime, we'll take bragging rights to be the very first full-on dork to observe that Feb. 21 is a Wednesday, and Harry Reid wants all the candidates, including the seeming majority of his Democratic colleagues who think they're presidential material, to come to the union's, er, the state's caucus forums and debates, so it's almost a certainty that there will be no substantive votes or actions scheduled in the Senate that day, and we all know what that means: Ensign can go golfing.
  • Speaking of the Hair Do, he got an early read Tuesday on one of the Republican-held Senate seats he'll be blamed for losing in 2008 in his new capacity as chairman of the Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee: Colorado wingnut Wayne Allard announced he'll be calling it a day. The Hill
  • We should care more about the search warrants and other signs of tomfoolery, chicanery and evildoing at the county hospital, as reported by George Knapp, really we should. But being uninsured and all we stopped paying medical bills ages ago -- frankly, we don't know why they even keep sending the bills -- and with the exception of movement on the universal coverage front, we've like totally lost interest in everything having to do with health care policy because it's all just a bunch of noise.
  • In other watch-your-head-because-Clark-County-is-exploding-all-around-you news, Yvonne Atkinson Gates announced she is leaving the Clark County Real Estate Developers Association, sometimes known as the County Commission. Well, if you can't regulate 'em, join 'em. The governor gets to appoint her replacement, and that person has to be a Democrat. Meantime, some commenters to the previous post seem to be think that Yvonne Atkinson Gates' resignation has something to do with the tomfoolery at UMC, which we should care more about, really we should, but ... never mind.

As I posted on another string -- who will replace Yvonne on the CCC?

Is Gov. Gibbons the guy to appoint her successor??

Well, if it HAS to be a Democrat (does it?), who are the leading candidates?

Gibbons has to be thinking (does he?) about it, or one of his puppeteers... And if can't be someone from up Gibbon's beloved North Nev....

--Helen Foley??
--Someone from the LV City Council?
--A Northtowner?
--A Hendersonian?
--Someone Gibbons hopes doesn't become a rising star to challenge the GOP in a future election?
--Another powerful guy's kid?
--Jim Rogers?
--Frank Schreck?
--Steve Sisolak?
--Richard Perkins? (less likely)
--??

Oh, I've got it -- Jim Gibbons!!

Er...I meant Jim Gibson... Talk about blowing a punchline...It's just that I almost forgot he existed...

Wouldn't the apointee have to live in the district in question?

Bill Waters has already paid $40,000 to the Gube for the seat, according to some disreputable blogger.

Uh, Bill WaLters, too.

This just in...Mayor Gibson to move into the CC distrcit to take the Gov's appointment...just KIDding

It does have to be a Democrat. But I wouldn't expect Gibbons to appoint a Democrat that any other Democrat would want to be caught dead with ... or, for that matter, caught in McCormick & Schmick's with.

too bad it can't be Myrna Williams....

Folks, how 'bout Tessa Hafen for the job? Someone can convince Gib-boy that if you rearrange the letters in her name, it spells "He-Fan-Asset," which isn't really a complete thought but mimics his fractured syntax.

Or they can tell him that removing her from her university job will be a poke in Jim Rogers' eye. Or they can just white-out whoever's name he types in and replace it with Hafen's. Like he'll know, or care?

Re Gates;

Wasn't there a story just last week that there were still many more indictments to come down from the investigation that bagged Herrera, Malone and the others? Maybe I heard it on Mitch Fox's show.

All together now: The person must live in the district. Hafen lives in Henderson. The district doesn't include Henderson. Therefore, it can't be Hafen, or Bill Walters, or anybody else, save for residents there.

Maybe Lynette Boggs McDonald can change party registration and get the gig. After all, she showed the world that district boundaries are mere arbitrary lines on a map.

If Clark County Republicans are consulted, which seems likely, they're going to want to find the Democrat most hostile to SEIU and ASFCME that they can find. Not sure who that is, but I wouldn't rule out someone relocating or switching party reg to get it.

One would expect that he'll seek to find an African-American or else it'll be an all-white Commission.

By the way, Penguin, don't know if you've been here long enough, but LBMcD was a Democrat not so long ago. She might invoke the Rogers principle (aptly described upthread as "Psyke! Take backs!") and make herself available.

Either that or she will invoke the wrath of God if she is not chosen.

In other news, Dawn Gibbons moved into a cottage on Madison Ave this morning and registered as a Democrat.
