It's poignant, really, that the first time the Jim Gibson campaign comes up with a decent complaint against Dina Titus, it was about two hours before the polls opened and after the papers had been published. But at least Gibson will have the satisfaction of knowing that by publicizing the message Titus stupidly, stupidly, stupidly left on the phone of a Gibsonian, the Republicans will get to use it on her.
Titus spokestress Jennifer Knight said that Titus issued an apology to the recipient of the message: "Dina knows this person and was hurt. Dina already called and apologized for leaving the message on a voice mail that conveyed the wrong tone."
Wrong tone? Au contraire. If you're going to leave ammunition with your opponent on voice mail, you might as well make it good. Show that you're ready to keep people in line, while making sure that everybody knows there's a horrible price to pay for backing the wrong horse. See, Titus really is a traditional Democrat. She's LBJ.
But let's turn to color commentary from the Gibson campaign. Hmm. We seem to have been removed from their e-mail list. Fortunately, Sebelius wasn't. He reports that the Gibson campaign referred to Titus as "unstable."
Ah, what a tremendous relief it must have been to Gibson to finally release all that pent-up frustration and say that, publicly. He was probably fretting that the campaign would come and go and he'd never get the opportunity to let down his hair and tell voters how he really feels about the one issue that he feels strongly about -- Titus.
Was it good for you, Mayor? Need a cigarette?
Sebelius makes the excellent point that if the Titus message is a sign of anything, it's continuity. She's out to win, 24/7, and has been for more than a year. We can see how Gibson might misinterpret that as instability, his own campaign being driven not by the realities of what it takes to win a modern political fight (let alone a fight against a Republican; they really do play mean), but by a sense of his own entitlement.
So congratulations, Mayor, on managing to purge yourself of the "unstable" card before the primary slipped away.
Meantime, Titus made a blunder, and unless her campaign unfolds unlike any other in the history of politics, it won't be the last. And about that mean streak? To hear the grown-up insider kids tell it, it's legendary.
Excellent. Because that's what it's going to take to beat Sig Rogich and that ass-clown he's propped up for governor.
A-MEN.

Amen times two. Last time I looked, neither side won elections by sitting there, being nice to your opposition and claiming divine right.

What a spin. This is the way Titus treats EVERYONE she feels is subordinate to her. This is how she will act if she is to be governor. This girl was the second I've heard of that TITUS called and threatened. She brought her fangs back out, or she ran out of medicine, I can't tell which. She held herself together masterfully in the debates, and now she is unravelling again. What an idiot. She wouldn't have apologized had her message not been leaked.

I was wondering when the Gleaner was going to rush to Dina's defense on this one.
"Show that you're ready to keep people in line, while making sure that everybody knows there's a horrible price to pay for backing the wrong horse." Yup-That would be a great strategy for bringing the party back together after she waged one of the most divisive primary campaigns in a long, long time.
See, all the hardcore Diniacs might feel like Gibson attacked them, a mendable situation. Dina actually attacked Gibson supporters, an unreconcialable offense. Until this morning, I felt like I would be able to support who ever came out of this, but no longer. If Dina wins tonight my support will be for Craig Bergland Green Party Candidate, because if I am going to support a loser I might as well go with some one I can respect, someone who wouldn't take out election eve stress on some sweet young lady with the gall to support someone other than Queen Dina.
And all things considered, I have no problem with hardball politics, I just don't want someone who is stupid enough to leave evidence of it. I mean, you would think veteran slimeball players like Titus and Lockard would be smarter than that or it could be a Rovian type ploy to look dumb to appeal to the lowest common dennominator.
Hey Dina, how's the view from the bottom?
Posted by: CollegeStudent | 08/15/2006 at 05:22 PM
good point. I know for a fact that she has not called the first girl she verbally assaulted. Dina do you really think you can use your power to humiliate others. The other question I have for you is what were you drinking?
Posted by: | 08/15/2006 at 05:24 PM
So all you Gibson-followers are tickled with yourselves? Preparing yourselves to vote for Gibbons, then, right? Got to show that the woman is un-stable, right at the last minute. When the Republicans can use it. So you can walk away from the Democratic party with your heads held high? You're gonna need some hair of the dog tomorrow.

I just heard the actual phone message and Dina's tone was not angry or threatening. She felt betrayed by a campaign volunteer and was expressing that. For the Gibson campaign to give this to the press at this time was pure desperation. I guess Gibson won't be participating in Unity Day!

ARD-Take off the blinders and pull the cotton from your ears. It wasn't her volunteer and it was none of her business who she worked for.
Anon 5:42- I am a very thick skinned person but to imply that I would ever vote for Gibbons is about as low and shitty an insult that there is. If Dina wins, I will follow my liberal heart and go Green because Dina's mean and vindicitve style has ruined any chance I could be fooled into believing what ever she says at "Unity Day"
It should offical Dina Titus appoligizes to the Democratic Party Day.

What in the hell does "It should offical Dina Titus appoligizes to the Democratic Party Day" mean. You think Dina is "unstable"? What have you been drinking?
Posted by: A Real Democrat | 08/15/2006 at 06:12 PM
Only Dina had people spy on her opponent over many nights.
Only Dina picked up the phone and called not one but two young women. (very respectful of women).
Only dina made herself look unstable.

I just got done walking 4 precints and my taint is all sweaty and stinky, tell Dina she can lick it.

I can only say that after tonight, I hope we won't be subjected to the vile and disgusting posts of the Gibson supporters, e.g. Beastie.

Hey Real Dem,
It's all your gonna hear, once our victory is secured after your candidate demands the tax payers pay for a recount at their expense. Go Gibson
Posted by: one eyed jack | 08/15/2006 at 06:42 PM
If Gibson even comes close to Titus, then she should demand a recount as Gibson "bought" those votes.
Posted by: A Real Democrat | 08/15/2006 at 06:54 PM
ARD---how can you say gibson supporters made dina look bad at the last minute? she showed her true colors at the last minute. she made herself look bad, better yet, she proved that she was bad. now lets talk about Evidence, the missing 6th E. she never had any until now. go green.
Posted by: | 08/15/2006 at 10:49 PM
All of this for naught -- the final tally was Dina Titus beating Gibson by 17 points -- not a close result by any measure -- and bearing out the big lead she had in the latest pre-election poll....
Looks like we're left with a few Lieberman-types who are so bitter about Titus's win they going to bolt on the D party's nominee.
Pity. Time to unite against the dredded Gibbons and ensure a max turnout for the Dem candidates for all the other races, notably CD2 and CD3 and Carter's uphill upset chance vs. Ensign.

Oh god....here i heard all this hype over a "NASTY PHONE MESSAGE" and blah blah blah and it turns out to be THAT?! God, at least give me something good...like she threatened to kill kittens or something...wow...was this over blown or what...she didnt say anything wrong, Gibson supporters seem to want to do anything to win...
