Daily Glean: Happy belated Last Throes Day

  • Nevada Republican Party Chairman Paul Adams says: "Ethics is an issue with individuals, it is not a partisan issue." That's what you say when the "individuals" hanging under ethical and/or criminal clouds hail predominantly from your party (AP). But more importantly, for the current news cycle, anyway, the RGJ site digs up an old Las Vegas Sun photo of an utterly rapt Harry Reid sitting ringside watching as two guys hit each other over and over again. Reid's wild-eyed look...it's so eerily familiar, where have we seen it before...oh yeah, it's the same look the Rummy, Cheney and the neocons had prior to the Iraq invasion. Maybe Reid's vote for the war was sincere after all. An obscured but clearly nonetheless bloodthirsty Reid can also be spotted cheering a fight, er, performing his official duties, in one R-J file shot (find elbow of B-HOP-adorned pugilist, look left), while another shows an equally enamored-with-violence Sen. John McCain. In the accompanying story, the R-J's Molly Ball finds out that the seats in question were credentialed by the Nevada Athletic Commission, to be doled out to, well, public officials, and can't be sold -- thus, when promoter Bob Arum got the money McCain paid for tickets to a fight, Arum couldn't take it, because the seats weren't his to sell, so he gave the money to Catholic Charities.
    • NYTimes editorial unimpressed with Harry, busts out the reference to Caesar's wife.
    • Several other newspapers from North Jersey to Albany to Nashville, say Reid oughtta quit screwing around and admit a mistake.
    • Sen. Barbara Boxer on Reid's freebies: "If I were him I would just write a check." San Mateo County Times. Probably not a bad idea, but apparently it should be made out to Catholic Charities.
  • The aggressive agenda to wonder if the Democrats need an aggressive agenda continues apace. Latest specimen provided by Ron Brownstein in the LATimes.
  • Squeezing oil from tar sands in Canada is proving to be every bit as ecologically sound as, oh, throwing acid at dirt to see if any gold is left behind (Post). We're beginning to suspect that oil might not be, you know, the fuel of the future.
  • Here at the Gleaner, we're not very good at holidays. For instance, we recently let a holiday go by without saying anything at all about it -- no, not Memorial Day (well, that, too), but Last Throes Day. "I think we may well have some kind of presence there over a period of time. But I think the level of activity that we see today, from a military standpoint, I think will clearly decline. I think they're in the last throes, if you will, of the insurgency." Cheney on Larry King, May 30, 2005.
  • Republican Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee is the "hottest woman in U.S. politics." Republican congresswoman wannabe Dawn Gibbons of Nevada is not. We learned this, by the way, from the hottest woman in Nevada blogging.

Comments

If you could refer to me as the "sluttiest woman in Nevada blogging" next time I think it would help my stats even more. I got a lot of Gleaner referrals today. Funny how that works.
