Trick or treat

Bush to rest of the nation. Let's quit talking about Scooter and  start talking about the wingnut I found to put on the Supreme Court.

Bush to base: We OK now?

Base to Bush: You're the Greatest!

Reid to microphone, pre-announcement: "I think it would create a lot of problems."

Reid to microphone, post announcement: "Conservative activists forced Miers to withdraw from consideration for this same Supreme Court seat because she was not radical enough for them.  Now the Senate needs to find out if the man replacing Miers is too radical for the American people." Added Reid, "President Bush would leave the Supreme Court looking less like America and more like an old boys club." It's always hard to know with Harry, but taken in context, in this instance, when he uses the phrase "old boys club," he apparently doesn't mean it in a nice way.

Reid to self: Poop. Now I have to pretend to care about this wingnut's ideology, because I'm a leadership guy, even though I myself am an ideological vacuum, and Alito's nickname is Scalito, and I once said I could support Scalia for the court. I miss Harriet.

Broadcasting industry executives to other broadcast industry executives: Now would be a good time to raise ad rates.

Oh, the hypocrisy. Of course, Conservatives want Alito to legislate for Conservative issues while on the bench. Miers was too liberal and unpredicatable for Them on women's and gay rights.

In Congress, if the Dems take it all the way to the Nuclear Option, it'll be our Sen. Reid's call.

But it won't come down to abortion, an issue on which Reid agrees with Alito.

Our "liberal" anti-abortion Senior Senator -- with his unsubtle nod toward the Pro-Life Gibson -- seems to be zigzagging left and right, which is a bad sign for a Nevada Dem Party that's already felt the sting of Boss Reid's miscalcuations and lack of judgment on Dem party management, candidates, issues, funding, etc.

Dem party activists, old lefty bores nearly all, are clearly for Titus, who, if she wins the primary, might have at least a sporting chance in 2006, what with Bush fatigue.

But this is double-personality Nevada -- likely outcome: a highly-funded Gibbons in a squeaker over a fractured Dem party, with Independents and Mormons fearing higher taxes, gay marriage, legal marijuana and taxpayer-paid abortions.

BUT, Demos might pick up a few of the other statewide offices. At least it's not 2002.
